Swedish webzine Judy have talked to Joel Martin who together with Matt “Radio Slave” Edwards forms Quiet Village. It’s good reading (in Swedish) if you ignore the line about that the contemporary dance music is moving away from house. Of course you all know that we have been moving towards traditional house the latest year or so.

Aww.Jonas, I’m truly sorry, thought you’d get the wink. But - and this is an important one - I do mean that dance music has moved away from the “traditional” housescene where the big names where, for example, Knuckles . However, the house music in general is very much alive these days. You can call it progressive, disco, cosmic, whatever - but the connection with the old, and widely spread, house scene is fading, I really think. /Kristofer

It’s not a big thing at all. I just try to tease you. :D

But I’m not sure if I get what you mean.

Actualy I think that the dance music scene in general, or at least some parts of it (it will always depend on what glasses you’re wearing and which direction you’re looking at) have been mowing towards a “traditional” house sound. With traditional I mean how it sounded in the 80s and early 90s, that Knuckles represent.

If you listen to german labels like Compost Black and Poker Flat you can hear alot of influences from old deep house.

Same thing over at DFA. Some tracks on Hercules and Loveaffairs album (“You Belong”, “Uh Uh Uh”) and Juan Macleans “Happy House” is nothing else than a tribute to old school house from New York and Chicago. Hey, that “house piano” they are using in “happy house” (hm… that piano they “stole” from an old dubtribe Sound system song) seems to be everywhere at the moment. And who where invited to do the remix on H&LAs “Blind” - Frankie Knuckles.

The Acid house revival have been going on for many years now, I’ll guess you could almost say that it’s over.

Yes, of course. And I do like the Knuckles-remix of Herc - actually it’s the only thing from DFA I loved this year. The “Happy House” track didn’t struck me.

It’s actually not a big thing at all but I do like when someone is trying to tease me. And for a person - me - who has spend the last year with mindless boogie, whatever we want and tirk, The opening line is very true. But, as you say, It depends on the glasses.

I agree. “Happy House” is probebly one of the most overrated tunes this year.
